Cold weather protection for the skin – why it matters

Cold weather protection for your skin – why it’s so important

When temperatures drop, our skin suffers the most. Cold air outside and dry indoor heating draw moisture from the skin and weaken its natural protective barrier.

The result: rough, tight skin, redness and sometimes even small cracks. With the right care, however, the skin can be effectively protected and kept soft and supple.

Why your skin needs extra protection in winter
Cold temperatures cause the blood vessels to constrict, meaning the skin receives less circulation and loses moisture more quickly.
At the same time, dry indoor heating draws even more water from the skin, making it more sensitive. Wind and sudden temperature changes also put stress on the skin’s natural barrier. In winter, the skin loses both lipids and moisture – which is why it needs targeted care and support.

How to protect your skin from the cold
During the colder months, choose rich, nourishing skincare products that contain lipids such as ceramides, shea butter or plant oils. These ingredients strengthen the skin barrier and help prevent moisture loss. Use gentle, replenishing cleansers to avoid further irritation.

Avoid washing your face with cold water in winter – use lukewarm water instead. Cold water can further reduce circulation and dry out the skin.

Incorporate hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin into your routine – they bind water within the skin and create a plump, comfortable feeling. Drink plenty of water to support your skin from within.

Even in winter, don’t skip sunscreen. UV rays are still active on cold, sunny days – especially in the mountains.
Lips and hands deserve special attention as they are more delicate and contain fewer oil glands. A nourishing balm or rich cream will protect them from cold and cracking.

Tip: In winter, use a richer night cream or a nourishing facial oil (even layered over your night cream) to help the skin barrier regenerate overnight. This allows your skin to recover more effectively and stay soft and smooth by morning.

Conclusion
Our skin needs more care and attention in winter than in the warmer months. With a combination of rich nourishment, deep hydration and consistent protection, it will stay soft, supple and healthy – even in cold, windy weather or dry indoor air.
