Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin) – causes and effective care

Keratosis Pilaris, commonly referred to as chicken skin or strawberry skin, is a widespread and harmless skin condition. It appears as small, rough bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs or buttocks, resembling goosebumps.

Medically, it is not dangerous – but many people consider it cosmetically bothersome.

The good news: with proper care, the skin’s appearance can be greatly improved.

Skincare tips for Keratosis Pilaris

1.    Gentle cleansing
Use mild, pH-balanced cleansers that do not dry out the skin. This strengthens the skin barrier and helps avoid irritation.

2.    Gentle exfoliation
Regular chemical exfoliation with AHA (e.g. lactic acid, glycolic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid) gently and effectively removes excess keratin. This unclogs hair follicles and smooths the skin. Mechanical scrubbing with gloves or harsh scrubs is less suitable, as it can cause irritation.

3.    Rich moisturising
Creams and lotions containing urea, lactic acid or salicylic acid are particularly effective. They provide intense hydration, smooth the skin’s surface and support cell renewal.

4.    Proper showering and bathing
Hot water and long baths dry out the skin. Short showers with lukewarm water, followed by rich moisturising, are a better choice.

5.    Medical options
In very pronounced or persistent cases, a dermatologist may prescribe stronger treatments – such as retinoid creams, which help refine the skin’s texture.

Keratosis Pilaris usually cannot be completely cured. However, with consistent care the symptoms can be greatly reduced: the skin becomes smoother, softer and more even. In severe or bothersome cases, consulting a dermatologist for tailored treatment options is recommended.
