Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin) – causes and effective care

Beauty Tip No. 9

Keratosis pilaris, commonly known as “chicken skin,” is a widespread and harmless skin condition.
It is characterized by small, rough bumps that often appear on the upper arms, thighs, or buttocks, giving the skin a slightly bumpy texture similar to goosebumps.

Medically, it is completely benign — but many people find it cosmetically bothersome and wish to improve the appearance of their skin.

Cause of Keratosis Pilaris
The cause of keratosis pilaris lies in a disorder of skin keratinization.
Dead skin cells are not shed properly and end up clogging the hair follicles.
Within these small openings, keratin — a natural protein that normally protects the skin — builds up and hardens into tiny, rough bumps.
Keratosis pilaris often appears on dry skin, especially in winter when cold weather, indoor heating, or hot showers further dehydrate the skin.

The good news: with the right skincare routine, the appearance of the skin can be significantly improved.
A gentle cleansing routine is the foundation. Use mild, pH-neutral products that do not strip the skin of moisture and help strengthen its natural barrier. Regular chemical exfoliation with AHA acids (such as lactic acid or glycolic acid) or BHA acids (salicylic acid) is equally important. These ingredients gently dissolve excess keratinized cells and unclog follicles, leaving the skin smoother and softer. Mechanical scrubs or vigorous rubbing with exfoliating gloves, on the other hand, are less suitable, as they may irritate the skin.

After showering, always follow with a rich moisturizer. Creams and lotions containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid provide deep hydration, promote cell renewal, and visibly smooth the skin’s surface.

For stubborn or pronounced keratosis pilaris, a dermatologist may prescribe stronger treatments, such as those containing retinoids, to refine the skin’s texture more effectively.

Although keratosis pilaris usually cannot be completely cured, consistent care can greatly reduce the symptoms:
the skin becomes smoother, softer, and more even. In more severe or distressing cases, it’s worth seeking professional advice — to achieve skin that feels comfortable and looks well cared for.

Conclusion
Keratosis pilaris is harmless, yet for many people it can be frustrating when the skin remains rough and uneven.
Patience is key — improvement happens gradually, but with regular care the skin becomes progressively smoother, softer, and more balanced.
By understanding your skin and providing it with the care it needs, you can manage keratosis pilaris effectively in the long term and restore a healthy, refined skin texture.
