Milia – understanding and properly caring for small skin bumps

Beauty Tip No. 9

Milia, also known as milk spots, are small white or yellowish bumps that usually appear on the face — especially around the eyes, on the cheeks, or at the temples.

They are completely harmless but are often considered bothersome, as they can make the skin appear uneven.

What are milia
Milia form when keratin – a protein also found in hair and nails – becomes trapped in tiny pockets beneath the skin’s surface. Although they resemble small pimples, they are quite different: milia are hard, non-inflamed, and painless.

Causes of milia
Milia can have various causes. They often result from a keratinization disorder, where skin cells do not renew evenly. Sun damage from UV radiation, which thickens the skin’s surface, can also contribute. In addition, unsuitable or overly rich skincare products, skin injuries, or a genetic predisposition may encourage their formation. They are not caused by bacteria or sebum but by hardened skin cells, which is why they cannot be squeezed out like blackheads or pimples.

Treatment and tips
Self-treatment should be avoided, as squeezing can lead to irritation or scarring. Milia should always be removed professionally — for example, by a dermatologist or esthetician who gently opens them with a sterile needle or laser.

To prevent milia, a gentle yet consistent skincare routine is recommended. Regular exfoliation with AHA or BHA acids—such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid—helps promote cell renewal and prevent keratin buildup. Skincare products should be lightweight and non-comedogenic, especially around the delicate eye area. Daily sun protection is also essential to shield the skin and prevent the formation of new milia.

Although milia are harmless, they can affect the appearance of the skin. With the right care, patience, and, if needed, professional support, the skin can regain its smooth, clear, and even texture.
