Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin – What’s the Difference?

A healthy, radiant complexion is what many of us strive for.

To care for your skin effectively, it’s important to understand its individual needs.
Dry skin and dehydrated skin are often confused – yet they are two very different conditions that require different approaches to care.

Dry Skin
Dry skin is usually genetically determined and considered a skin type.
It produces too little sebum, and therefore lacks lipids (fats) that normally form a protective layer and prevent moisture loss.

Typical signs:

  • Skin that feels dry, rough, or uncomfortably tight
  • Often feels itchy or develops fine lines and small cracks
  • Sensitive to cold weather, wind, or aggressive cleansing products

External factors such as cold weather, excessive washing, or hot showers can also worsen dryness.

Skincare tip:
Dry skin needs rich, lipid-based products that help strengthen the skin barrier.
Creams containing ceramides, fatty acids, or squalane, combined with moisturising ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, are ideal.
They nourish the skin, lock in moisture, and protect it from further dehydration.

Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin is not a skin type but a skin condition. It produces enough oil but struggles to retain water. As a result, the skin may appear dull, rough, or tight without necessarily being flaky.

Common triggers:

  • dry indoor air or air conditioning
  • strong sun exposure and heat
  • a weakened skin barrier caused by improper skincare
  • in rare cases, insufficient water intake

Skincare Tip:
Dehydrated skin primarily needs humectants—ingredients that attract and retain water. Particularly effective are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera. Light lipids or moisture-boosting oils can also help reduce water loss but should always be combined with hydrating ingredients.
